Adding a printer to the network
(Edited from Gilbert's email - needs more editing)
Use the DNS module to look up an available IP address. It is more accurate than the Nat Printer Move spreadsheet (\\archer\CS\Computer Support General\Printers\NAT Printer move\Nat Printer Move.xls).
When replacing an existing networked printer, use the same IP address.
Printers in different departments belong to different subnets. For example: ITS Dept printer subnet (172.16.10.xxx) xxx ranges from 30 to 50. Only printers should be in that DHCP range. If you see a PC in that range, contact Roberto. Be aware of the subnets when assigning IP addresses to printers.
Ping the IP to double check that it is unassigned.
Configure and add entries to the DNS module:
1. With Administrator rights, go to Start, Programs, Administrative Tools.
2. Click on DNS.
3. A window will prompt for location of DNS server. Choose: “The Following Computer” type in this IP Address 138.202.175.2
4. Press Go.
5. Under “Forward lookup Zones” go to folder “usfca.printer”. Do make any changes with other folders in the zone.
6. Add a new entry by right clicking on “usfca.printer” and choosing “New Host (A)?”.
7. Under “Name”, enter the printer name.
8. Under “Printer IP address”, type in the printer address.
9. Check “Create Associated Pointer (PTR) Record” and hit “Add Host”.
Make changes to the Printer Move spreadsheet.
1. Follow the instructions to set up the trays, ink cartridges, etc.
2. Connect the printer via USB cable and run the setup CD.
3. During installation, choose Network Configuration.
4. Plug the printer to the network to detect the printer.
5. It should detected - for example, “HPOJPK550 with IP 172.16.16.171”.
6. Click on “Network configuration” to open the configuration web page http://172.16.16.171.
7. Change the settings to “Manual static IP” - for example, 172.16.16.48.
Notify Shining for printer queue additions or changes. Provide her with the model name, type, location, queue name and IP address.
